The request comes after a shocking discovery: another 751 bodies have just been detected in unmarked graves beneath the site of a former Catholic school for indigenous children.
“I have spoken personally directly with His Holiness Pope Francis to press upon him how important it is not just that he makes an apology but that he makes an apology to indigenous Canadians on Canadian soil,” Trudeau said.
This is the latest in a series of disturbing revelations involving indigenous children – some as young as 3 years old – that were buried on the grounds of Catholic-run schools across Canada.
The schools were operated during the 1800s and 1900s as part of a program, overseen by the Canadian government, to assimilate native peoples into western society.
Pope Francis has yet to agree to formally apologize for the Church’s role.
Many people believe an apology is the least the Vatican could offer after the suffering it caused. But others disagree – they argue that the modern Catholic Church shouldn’t be held responsible for sins committed by previous generations.
