THE POWER OF THE TONGUE: A disciplined person knows how to keep a tight rein on their tongue. Our tongue can make or mar us. The tongue is one of the tiniest part of the human body but it can do a lot of things. We can use our tongue either for good or for evil. The tongue could be used to bless or to curse. Without the tongue we cannot speak. The tongue enables us to speak. The tongue is one of the most powerful parts of the human body. There is what is called responsible use of the tongue. our tongue should not be abused. We are encouraged to mind our words, language , utterances and things that come out of our mouths. There is power in spoken words. Words have power and once a word is spoken, it can no longer be taken back. Therefore we ought to weigh our words before we speak. Taming the tongue is very important. It requires careful mastery. The tongue has put a lot of people in trouble. According to Pakistani American Muslim scholar, Yasir Qadhi, “the tongue is but a small soft flesh. Yet it is capable of breaking the strongest bonds and destroying the most powerful of relationships. Apostle James in his letter/epistle wrote “if anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless. James 1:26. I have always learned from my mother that if you don’t have anything nice to stay, be silent. The tongue can give offense. Anyone who can control their tongue can control any kind of urge or emotion. It is good to have filter and not be a loose canon. We cannot afford to have verbal diarrhea. Let us watch our words, what we say, where we say it and how we say it because walls have ears. The tongue is not to be used to gossip, bring people down, denigrate them, Injure people’s good name, spoil their reputation, utter profanity and curse but rather, the tongue is to be used to bless, encourage, uplift, advice, comfort and console others. The tongue can be poisonous.
